SIG SAUER Partners with Skeleton Crew Adventures to Raise Awareness for Veteran Mental Health

NEWINGTON, N.H. – SIG SAUER, Inc. is pleased to partner with Skeleton Crew Adventures, a charitable organization providing veterans and first responders living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) the opportunity to heal and learn to live with their trauma through sailing experiences. Since the organization’s founding in 2016, Skeleton Crew has led sailing missions across the globe for veterans and is now set to represent the United States in The Ocean Globe Race 2023 to raise awareness for veteran mental health and suicide awareness with the official U.S. cast-off to take place July 12, 2023 from Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

“SIG SAUER is honored to support the mission of Skeleton Crew Adventures, and invites the New Hampshire community to join us for a historic cast-off event as they officially begin their journey from Portsmouth to the September starting point of the race across the Atlantic Ocean in England,” began Tom Taylor, Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President, Commercial Sales, SIG SAUER, Inc. “The Skeleton Crew boat is crewed by U.S. military veterans who are all dealing with mental and/or physical disabilities and have found healing through sailing. The crew is participating in the race for the sole purpose of raising awareness for their mission and bringing attention to veteran mental health issues.”

The official U.S. cast off will occur from the Portsmouth Pier at Prescott Park on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, beginning at 6:00pm. The U.S. Coast Guard will provide an official escort for the crew in the river and the Portsmouth Fire Department will provide a water cannon salute. Portsmouth Mayor Deaglan McEachern will speak. The public is invited to attend and actively participate in sending the team off for the race.

Skeleton Crew Adventures was founded by veteran Taylor Geiger who has dealt with mental health issues resulting from his military service. In 2017, Taylor decided to sail from Pensacola, FL to Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America to raise awareness for the organization. His sailboat was in very poor condition and restored by him personally by watching instructional videos to make this voyage. On his journey he experienced life-threatening challenges and persevered to reach Cape Horn; Taylor’s journey was documented in the documentary “Hell or High Seas” on Amazon Prime. Their journey in the Ocean Globe Race will also be documented.

Ocean Globe Race 2023 is a fully crewed retro sailing race around the world on ocean-going GRP production yachts designed before 1988 without computers, satellites, GPS or high-tech materials. The official start of the race begins from England in September for an 8-month trip around the world. The 2023 sailing of the race marks the 50th anniversary sail.
