Mammut has a long history tied to ropemaking, since 1862 when it first started developing agricultural ropes in Switzerland. The brand has continued to innovate in gear built for the mountains since then, including its newest insulation technology, LoopInsulation. An end-of-life solution for industrial rope scraps, LoopInsulation achieves the alpine trifecta – warmth, lightweight, and packability for mountain athletes.
LoopInsulation addresses a significant need within the outdoor apparel industry by offering an eco-friendly insulation alternative that enhances the sustainability of products without compromising performance. The development of LoopInsulation began after an analysis of Mammut’s carbon footprint in 2018, which revealed that 13% of the company’s CO2 emissions came from rope manufacturing. Following the analysis, Mammut started researching what was possible with repurposed rope scraps, leading to the creation of LoopInsulation.

“LoopInsulation has been years in the making. We first piloted a program in 2020 using ropes to make t-shirts,” said Collin Jenkins, Commercial Director at Mammut. “Our first insulation trial was with retired climbing ropes, but we quickly realized that the most effective material for insulation is the polyester used in industrial ropes – like construction and machinery. The unique cluster we were able to make created a great barrier against the cold, while allowing moisture to escape, ensuring comfort and protection against incremental weather. LoopInsulation is a unique solution in the market. We see it as a springboard to continued innovation in the market.”
LoopInsulation is made from industrial rope manufacturing scraps. Through a mechanical recycling process, free of chemicals, these scraps are transformed into high-quality insulation. “With Mammut Loopinsulation, we are embracing a circular and resource-conscious approach to material reuse. This is a critical step toward the future of sustainable outdoor clothing,” explains Helena Theba, Material Management Lead at Mammut.
For the fall 2024 season, Mammut has successfully recycled 12 tons of rope scraps, converting them into valuable insulation material. The 100% polyester sheets and clusters are being used in new jackets, including the Sender IN Hooded Jacket, Crag IN Hooded Jacket and Rime Light Flex IN Hooded Jacket.
The Sender IN and Crag IN Hooded Jackets are for warmth and comfort in sub-zero conditions, they combine LoopInsulation with a recycled wind-and-water-repellent outer fabric for the protection needed for mountain adventures. The Crag IN Hooded Jacket has a 300 gram fill weight with a durable 100% recycled polyamide shell. The Sender IN Hooded Jacket has a 330 gram fill weight with a durable recycled polyester and spandex shell. The Rime Light Flex IN is a lightweight hybrid jacket for a wide range of high output mountain sports. Body-mapped insulation meets stretchy fleece for optimal temperature regulation and freedom of movement for big days outdoors.
Rime IN Flex Hooded Jacket and Sender IN Hooded Jacket, both featuring LoopInsulation, were honored with the prestigious OutDoor by ISPO Award in 2023, recognizing the company’s dedication to innovation in sustainability.
