GU Energy Labs is excited to announce a new partnership with Axiom Space, developer of the next-generation spacesuit that may be used in support of future space exploration missions in low-Earth orbit (LEO) and on the Moon. Together, GU and Axiom Space are working to develop an advanced in-suit nutrition system for astronauts, providing a crucial energy source for these extreme athletes working in the most extreme environments.
The collaboration is a natural fit for GU, the family-owned, Berkeley-based brand that created the world’s first sports energy gel and continues to develop sports nutrition products that help athletes of all kinds go beyond their own limits. “At GU, we have always been inspired to fuel athletes pushing themselves to the extremes and this collaboration is an extension of that mission,” said Roxanne Vogel, Nutrition & Performance Research Manager at GU and accomplished endurance athlete in her own right. “Our goal is to provide critical nutrients in a convenient, hands-free delivery format, to help fuel astronauts as they push the limits of human space exploration.”. Vogel and the GU team are already working closely with Axiom Space on solving for the design complexities of delivering calorie-dense nutrition in a low-gravity environment.
Reflecting on the importance of this new partnership and the implications of space exploration, GU President Magda Boulet added, “Axiom Space is at the forefront of expanding access to space worldwide and is paving the way for the innovations of tomorrow. Curiosity and exploration are at the core of GU’s spirit, and it is an honor to partner with them. Providing solutions for athletes has been our north star for the past 30 years, and we are committed to empowering everyone to experience the joy of pushing beyond what they thought capable. Exploring space inspires us all and gives us permission to challenge the boundaries of what we know and rethink what’s possible.”
“Axiom Space is excited to partner with GU Energy Labs on developing an innovative nutritional system designed to fuel for beyond,” said Russell Ralston, EVA Deputy Program Manager. “This in-suit EVA nutritional system will provide the nutrient rich support astronauts need to perform highly intense, endurance activities including space walks for over eight hours on the lunar surface, exploring previously unreached portions of the Moon and conducting extensive science research to benefit humanity.”
