In America it is estimated that fifty-three million people rely on food banks. An estimated nine million children face hunger, that is one in every eight children in America. For school age children what they eat during school hours may be all they have for the day. Various organizations have come together to offer backpack services to help combat this issue. Backpack food programs provide nutritious, non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food to children to ensure they get enough food on weekends and holidays to avoid hunger when they can’t depend on school meals. BCA Foundation donated to BackPack Pals in NC to help our community by providing a monetary donation to get backpacks for these children for the summer. BackPack Pals started in September 2008 by providing food to Lee County students who have little or nothing to eat on the weekend. Children are identified as candidates for the program through input from teachers, counselors, and school administration. BackPack Pals provide ten to twelve food items to have at home each week. Every backpack food program is unique to the community and school it serves. No matter what state you are in there are local organizations that offer the same type of service. Find a local one near you and help make your community better for all.
