NOAA Extends Speed Limit Deadline

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has delayed the decision on the North Atlantic Right Whale Vessel Strike Reduction Rule until 2024. The rule is expected to be released sometime in the winter, which could be as late as March 2024.

NOAA’s proposed rule includes:

  • Imposing the speed limit on smaller boats, those from 35-65 feet
  • Expanding the areas
  • Adjusting the dates for which the rule applies
Currently, most vessels 65 feet or longer must travel at 10 knots or less in certain locations along the U.S. East Coast at certain times of the year.
